Spam mail is unwanted e-mail. It is e-mail that a user has not requested for, or usually knows about. Spam mail also known as junk or bulk e-mails are sent by spammers, usually attempting to legally or illegally sell their products or services. Spammers send copies of an e-mail to as many users as they can. Today over 90% of e-mail’s are spam mail. This has become a major concern around the world, and is taking up an individual’s time deleting spam mail, and also taking up business resources such as bandwidth. Laws have been put into place to prosecute spammers, however spam mail seems to be on the rise all the time. Spam mail is also known as unsolicited (Not looked for or requested) e-mail.

How did they get my e-mail address?

E-mail addresses are collected from a number of sources as below;

• Chat rooms,

• Websites, most commonly when a user purchases a product or service and specifies their e-mail address as part of an online transaction.

• Newsgroups, Forums and Blogs

• viruses which harvest users address books

• And other sources

E-mail addresses are sold to other spammers. Much of spam mail is sent to invalid e-mail addresses as well, hoping that there is a possibility it would be a legitimate address.

Basics into avoiding Spam mail

Avoid giving out your e mail address to anyone, such as the sources mentioned above.

Avoid signing up for free offers and ensure you tick the option, not to participate in receiving future promotions/offers.

Create a 2nd e-mail address so you can use this for potential spam mail.

Purchase spam protection for your computer.

Check with your ISP, they may provide spam protection.
